Born in Lynn and a lifelong resident of the City, he was the son of the late Herbert and Ruth (Banks) Maag. He was the son-in-law of the late Yvonne (Staples) Palleschi and her late husband Rinaldo Palleschi.
Dick graduated from Lynn Classical High School, Class of 1957. He played on both baseball and basketball teams. He was captain of the basketball team in 1957. He then went on to Salem State College, graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science, and was a member of the Salem State Baseball Championship Team in1963. In 1968 he received a Master’s Degree in Education from Salem State College.
He first taught for two years in Meriden, CT. He taught at the Callahan School, Lynn for seven years, then taught History for 28 years at Lynn Classical High School. He then worked in Lynn Tutorial Services for three years before retiring.
He coached baseball at Lynn Classical from 1972 to 1995. He was also a Babe Ruth coach, St. Mary’s High School J.V. coach, and coached at Sacred Heart School and at Barry Park. For over 25 years he coached at Frank Carey’s Summer Baseball School in North Reading. He was also a Baseball Umpire for over 15 years. He umpired high school, J.V.E., and in the Lynn Babe Ruth League. He was inducted into the Lynn Classical Hall of Fame in May 2019. He was a former member of the Mass. Baseball Coaches Assn., and an Associate member of the Franco-American War Veterans Post 12.
He was the father of the late Michelle L. (Maag) Alvarenga, of Tracey L. Maag and her partner Scott Adama of Gardner, MA, and of Kelly L. Maag and her husband Jeffery LaVallee of Gastonbury, CT, and was the grandfather of Mike, Noah, Colton, Chase and Crew. He was also the brother of the late Joan O’Donnell and was the uncle of Robert, John and Scott O’Donnell.
Visitation for Richard will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2023 in the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple Street, Lynn, from 10am -12pm, followed by a Funeral Service at 12pm, in the Funeral Home. Burial will be held in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Lynn.
