Born in Lawrenceville, IL, he was the son of the late Gerald Francis and Sarah Dorothy (Scanlan) Butler. He was the devoted father of Alanna Guptill, Tara Butler, Heather Cook, and Michael Nichol; and cherished grandfather of Emily Pauli, Sarah Cook, Parker Cook, Aiden Carrasco, and Amelia Carrasco.
He grew up in Nahant and graduated from Lynn English High School with the Class of 1961. He served in the elite United States Regular Army’s Intelligence Security Agency’s Special Operations Unit at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and Shemya Island, Alaska. Captain Gerald W. Butler, of the Massachusetts State Guard, is the former curator of Fort Warren and Fort Independence, Boston Harbor, and Fort Rodman, New Bedford, Massachusetts. He raised his family in Nahant, Massachusetts while making a career as a Technical Artist/Illustrator/Cartoonist at Verizon in which he retired in 2007. He was a dedicated Military Historian and spent much of his life writing and illustrating books on this subject.
Gerald’s hobbies included model cars, boat building, reading, and he had a passion for music, particularly techno and classical. Everyone who spent time with him knew he had a great sense of humor and loved making quirky remarks that always brought a smile to their faces
A Visitation for Gerald will be held Friday, July 19, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM in the Cuffe- McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple Street, Lynn. His Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nahant.
