George was born in Lynn, son of the late Joseph H. and Alice (Smith) Gunning. He was a life long resident of the city and was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School Class of 1946. After returning from the Korean War he enrolled at Salem State College and graduated with his Bachelors degree in Education in 1959.
George was a United States Army veteran and served during the Korean Conflict.
He was a Teacher for the Lynn School Department, he began his career in 1959 at Eastern Junior High School. He was transferred to Lynn Classical High School in 1966 where he was a Science teacher. In 1970 he was the Faculty Manager at Classical. In 1986 George was the acting Principal . In 1987 he served as Temporary Vice Principal until his retirement on June 30, 1988 after 29 years of service to the Lynn Public Schools. George also served as the Classical Hockey Coach and Athletic Director for many years.
George was a long time communicant of Sacred Heart Church and also enjoyed golfing.
In addition to his wife George is survived by his three loving daughters Mary E. Wise and her husband William of East long Meadow, MA, Janet A. Moaratty and her husband Jay of Exeter, NH and Anne M. Blanchette and her husband Albert of Methuen. One brother Vincent T. Gunning of Lynn. Also survived by eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Reverend Joseph H. Gunning, SVD, James, Edward, Grace and Catherine Gunning, Alice Curley, Frances Riehl and Ann Decareau.
Funeral from the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St. Lynn, Monday at 10:00 AM. George’s Funeral Mass will be held in Sacred Heart Church at 11:00 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Sunday 2-5 PM. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Lynn.
