He was born in Batavia and graduated from Batavia High School and Utica College. He earned graduate degrees in chemistry from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and was a post- doctoral fellow at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana.
Mr. Gillard was employed as a chemist with USDA and EPA in Washington, DC for several years before moving back to this area to work for several private contract laboratories. He was most recently employed by Research Foundation in the toxicology department at the University of Buffalo.
Over the years, Mr. Gillard volunteered with several local organizations. He enjoyed gardening and the outdoors.
In addition to his wife of 38 years, the former Mary Ellen Franz, survivors include two sons, Patrick and John; a sister, Deborah (James) Aiken; several nieces and nephews; several in-laws and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Daniel.
Relatives and friends may call from 2-4PM and 7-9PM on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012 at the Bates & Tuttle Funeral Home, 112 N. Main St. Lyndonville, NY 14098. A Mass of Christan Burial will be celebrated at 11:00AM on Monday at Saint Joesph’s (Our Lady of the Lake Parish) 38 Lake Ave. Lyndonville with the Pastor, Fr. James F. Hassett celebrating. Burial will be in the Stafford Rural Cemetery, Stafford, NY.
