Tom was reunited with his long-lost son, Walt, in 2006. They immediately became close after reconnecting, and the following years saw them spending quality time traveling and playing pool as a team, winning multiple local pool tournaments and competing nationally in Las Vegas. Tom was part of his son’s wedding in 2010, and was there for the birth of his two grandchildren in 2011 and 2014. Tom and Walt took care of each other for 18 years, with Walt acting as his caregiver later in life when his health began to fail.
Tom is survived by his son, Bryan “Walt” Winfrey and his wife Lindsey of Lynchburg; his cherished grandchildren, William “Xander” Winfrey and Katherine Winfrey; one sister, Diana “Dino” Dean of Timberville; and his niece, Katie Drake and her husband Mike of Harrisonburg, along with their son, Max.
He was preceded in death in 2000 by his mother, Lois Whittington Winfrey; his brother, Robert Winfrey of Lancaster, PA, in 2007; his father, William Lee “Bill” Winfrey in 2019; and his youngest brother, James Winfrey in 2020.
A private family gathering will be held at a later date to celebrate Tom’s life, in accordance with his wishes. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, P.O. Box 937, Verona, VA 24482, or via their website at www.brafb.org.
The family is being assisted by Whitten Timberlake Chapel in Lynchburg, Virginia.
