Funeral service for Sheila Ann Russell Scogin, 82, of Huntington, will be held 2 PM on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at Gipson Funeral Home with Bro. Greg Denman officiating. Interment will follow at Treadwell Cemetery.
Mrs. Scogin was born June 11, 1941 in Huntington, Texas, daughter of the late Mary Alice (Denman) and Delbert Russell. She passed away Saturday, February 17, 2024 in the Huntington Health Care & Rehabilitation Center.
Sheila graduated from Huntington ISD and SFASU. She taught school in Woodville and Kountze. Sheila was a lifetime member of Texas State Teachers Association, past president of Huntington Youth Recreation Association, friends of McMullen Memorial Library, Huntington Bluegrass, Old Time Music Association, and Secretary / Treasurer of Treadwell Cemetery Association. She wrote a column for the Diboll Free Press from 1980 – 1991 and then began again in 1995 until the paper stopped. From 2000 to 2023, she wrote for the Huntington Herald and was instrumental in building the first Huntington City Park with many other volunteers. She was a member of the Chestnut Drive Baptist Church.
Survivors include son, Randy Birch and daughter-in-law, Eileen Birch; sister, Christal Shaw; nephew and wife, Neal and Carrie Shaw; niece, Sandra Hooper; great-nephew, Walker Shaw; great-niece, Colleen Shaw; step-children, Tim Scogin, Pat and W.C. Scroggins, Leslie and Patrick Richard; aunts, Joyce Webb, Gladys Russell; step-grandchildren, Brad Reid and Heather, Brandi Lankford, Jodi Morgan and Byron, Reilly Garrett and Danielle, Joshua Scogin and Bethany, and Kim Scogin; adopted grandchildren, Patti Schmidt and Billy Schmidt; and special friends, LaWanna Gainer, Melinda Harris, Lulla Adams, Sharon Berry, Tommie Lowery, Nell Addington, Lorrie Addington, Margie Green.
She is preceded in death by parents, Delbert and Mary Denman Russell; brother, Ishmael Russell; husbands, James Birch and Beamon Scogin.
Pallbearers will be Jase Berry, Lane Lowery, Perry Morales, Sam Webb, Bill Schmidt, Cody Massey, Neal Shaw, Steve Massey.
Honorary pallbearers will be Buddy Lowery, Mike Ebarb, Dean McMullen, Johnny Lee, Kirk Brown, Tony Buckner, Malcolm Arnold, Barry Green, Brian Green, Barry Hancock, and Bill Bailey of Colmesneil.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Treadwell Cemetery, P.O. Box 1660 Huntington, TX, 75949, or McMullen Memorial Library, 902 N. Main St. Huntington, TX, 75949.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
