Services for John William, “J. W.”, Shemwell, Sr., 75, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 9, 2013 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with The Reverend Arthur A. Callaham officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Mr. Shemwell was born October 2, 1938 in Shreveport, Louisiana, the son of the late Mary (Adair) and John Harris Wade Shemwell. He passed away Thursday, December 5, 2013 at his residence.
J. W. Shemwell was a wonderful man who loved his family and cherished spending time with his beautiful wife, their children, and all their grandchildren. He enjoyed many years with his co-workers and customers working in pharmacy and he always shared his wisdom with everyone he knew. He loved relaxing in his chair with a good book or being outdoors fishing, hunting, camping, or in his boat out on the lake. Working on his yard and playing with his dogs were his pride and joy. J.W. had an incredible sense of humor and an infectious smile, and anyone who knew him adored him. Jaywas a wonderful husband, great Dad, amazing paw paw, brother, and friend to so many. He will be greatly missed.
He worked as a pharmacist; working in Louisiana, Medical Discount Pharmacy in Lufkin for more than 25 years, and Brookshire Brothers Pharmacy for 10 years. He attended school at A. C. Steer Grade School, Broadmore Jr. High and Byrd High School. He obtained his Bachelor Degree in Pharmacy at Centenary College and attained his Pharmacy License and continued his education at Northwestern Louisiana State College. Mr. Shemwell was a member of St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Shemwell of Lufkin; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Peggy Shemwell and Wade and Mary Ann Shemwell, all of Shreveport, Louisiana; sister, Virginia Stakes of Houston; children, Jay Shemwell of Houston, Chris Shemwell of New Braunfels, Scott Bozeman of Lufkin and Peggy Hartt of Lufkin; grandchildren, Scarlett Shemwell of Houston, Adam Moffett of Houston, Jordan Hartt of Lufkin, Brandon and Shelly Bozeman of Lufkin, Justin and Gaby Bozeman of Lufkin; Chase and Chrissie Bozeman of Lufkin, Hannah Bozeman of Lufkin, Cherise Boyd of New Braunfels, and J. C. Boyd of New Braunfels; great-grandchildren, Braiden Moffett of Houston, Logan Bozeman of Lufkin, and Maxx Bozeman of Lufkin; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, family members, and friends.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Gipson Funeral Home.
