Services for Douglas Lionel Nichols, Sr., 78, Pollok, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at O’Quinn Baptist Church, with Bro. Bud Magee and Bro. James Bickley officiating. Interment will follow in the Gann Cemetery.
Mr. Nichols was born May 25, 1938 in Whiterock, Texas, the son of the late Glenn and Maxine Nichols. He passed away Thursday, March 9, 2017 at his residence.
Doug married the love of his life, Johnnie Mae Nichols, on June 26, 1957. He served in the United States Marine Corps for 2 years with an honorable discharge. He served on the Central School Board for 3 years. He retired as a firefighter after 23 years of service with the City of Lufkin Fire Department. He served as Deacon of O’Quinn Baptist Church, where he was a member. He was baptized on September 24, 1978.
Doug loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, and traveling. He devoted his life to his family and community.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and Pete Thompson, Robin and Kirk Dunn, and Brenda and Mike McClendon; son and daughter-in-law, Douglas Jr. and Jennifer Nichols; grandchildren and their spouses, Jarod Thompson, Matt and Brielle Thompson, Jeramy Nichols, Jason and Candance Nichols, Chris Dunn, Ben Dunn, Drew and Chelsey McClendon, Ashley and Jay Winkelmann, and Allie Nichols; great-grandchildren, Brayden Thompson, Hunner and Hallie Thompson, Marleigh Jo McClendon, and Makayla and Cooper Nichols; brothers, Emmett Nichols, Glenny Nichols and Jim Allen Nichols
Doug was preceded in death by his wife, Johnnie Nichols, special grandson, Eric Landon McClendon; parents, Glenn and Maxine Nichols; in-laws, John and Verna Bolt; sister, Mary McCaslin, and a number of other family members.
Pallbearers will be Jason Nichols, Jeramy Nichols, Matt Thompson, Drew McClendon, Ben Dunn, Jay Winkelmann, Brayden Thompson and Hunner Thompson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jarod Thompson, Chris Dunn, Bob Westbrook, James Chamness, and O’Quinn Baptist Church Deacons, Steve Rice, John Curry, Bob Holmes, and Gilbert Rice.
Memorial contributions in Doug’s memory may be made to Hospice in the Pines, 1504 W. Frank Avenue, Lufkin, TX 75904; or to O’Quinn Baptist Church, 7433 Hwy 69N, Pollok, TX 75969.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday evening at Gipson Funeral Home.
