Ruth was born July 1st, 1919, in Elgin to Henry and Elisabeth Ginsel. She grew up west of town on the family farm which was bordered by Littig Road, County Line Road, and Ginsel Lane. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1937, where she was an honor student.
After two years in business college, she married her high school sweetheart, Lynn Ray, also of the El-Hi class of ’37. Together they created a loving home which centered on service to the Lord. Lynn passed away in 2004, ending a marriage that lasted for sixty-five years. One son, Jon Lynn Ray, died in 1971. Their other son, David, and his wife, Karen, live in Lubbock.
The Rays also raised Ruth’s nephew and niece, Duane Swofford (wife Betty) and Nancy (Mrs. Gene) Berry, both deceased. Ruth was also preceded in death by a sister, Clara Swofford (Bill), and two brothers, Barney Ginsel (Agness) and Gilbert Ginsel (Dorothy).
Ruth was both a homemaker and a pioneer in the data processing field, working at Texas Tech University and for banks in Lubbock and Dallas. She also assisted Lynn in his career as a masonry contractor. In retirement, the Rays continued to volunteer their talents as they helped to build mission churches in Texas and Louisiana.
Other survivors include grandchildren Chris Ray (Karen) of Dallas, Steven Ray (Terra) of Carrollton, Lori Truitt (Lee) of Lubbock, Tim Berry (Martha) of Lubbock, Alan Berry (Monica) of Hale Center, Jamie Berry (Rosemary) of Phoenix, AZ, Richard Berry (Ginger) of Ft. Worth, Sarah Puffinbarger (Victor) of Tucson, AZ, Jason Swofford (Lisa) of Lubbock, Andrew Swofford (Lisa) of Lubbock, Randy Swofford of Blackwell, Stacy Asbell (Bill) of Katy, and numerous great-grandchildren.
