Ray's journey began in Iowa, where fate introduced him to Sandra Eileen Scott, the love of his life. They married on January 11, 1970, in Bloomfield, Iowa. After a valiant fight against cancer, Sandra passed away in 1997, leaving Ray to cherish her memory.
In 1970, Ray graduated from Barber College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, marking the start of a successful career in barbering. However, his adventurous spirit led him to Texas, where he embarked on a fulfilling career in the trucking industry. From dispatch to driving and from repair to safety coordination, Ray's expertise knew no bounds. Ray had an incredible knowledge of anything with an engine and wheels. Even in his final days at J&B Trailer in Lubbock, Ray continued to inspire those around him.
Ray was known as a loyal friend and trusted mentor to many. His generosity knew no bounds, evident in his regular blood donations and unwavering support for his community. Outside of work, Ray found joy in his hobbies—cars, golf, fishing, and cheering for the Texas Tech Red Raiders and his beloved Dallas Cowboys. But above all, Ray treasured his family, finding immense pride in his granddaughters' achievements as they blossomed into strong, accomplished women.
Ray is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandy, and his parents, Elmer and Imogene, as well as his sister Dora and brother Mike. He leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience, survived by his daughter Samantha and her husband David Kennedy; granddaughter Bailey and husband Brendan Toplean; and granddaughter Erynn Kennedy; three nieces, seven great nephews, two great nieces, four great-great nieces and one great-great nephew.
As we mourn Ray's physical absence, we find solace in the belief that he has found eternal peace, reunited with his beloved Sandy in the embrace of our Lord.
A funeral service for Ray will be held Tuesday, February 13, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Resthaven Funeral Home, 5740 West 19th St, Lubbock, TX 79407. Following the funeral service will be a graveside service at Resthaven Memorial Cemetery, Lubbock, TX.
