Mary “Louise” Hicks, 93, of Lubbock, Texas, passed away September 29th, 2022. She was born to William Henry Hogan, Sr. and Cora Lee (Barton) Hogan in Tioga, Texas on August 22nd, 1929. She was married to Alfred Raymond Hicks, Jr. on December 23rd, 1954.
While Louise was working at Eddy’s Café downtown in 1947, a gentleman told her that she was too nice of a girl to be working there and she ought to come work for him in his cotton office. This would be the beginning for an amazing career for her. She learned the ropes working at various offices such as Marion Sharp, W.D. Harvey, Plains Compress, PCCA, Bill Roberts, Walter Grammar and Cecil Stubblefield. In 1978, Louise ventured out on her own, establishing the Louise Hicks Cotton Company. In 1979, she purchased the name Consolidated Cotton Company from Walter Grammar, a previous employer. She was forever grateful to Buford Bray who was instrumental in helping her set up and manage her new business. She said that he was such a nice man who always helped people, and that was something she wanted to make sure she accomplished during her time in the business as well.
Louise was the first woman to become a member of the Lubbock Cotton Exchange in 1980. She was invited to the International Cotton Association dinner in Liverpool, England, which was a big honor. And within the Lubbock Cotton Exchange, she was politely referred to as the “Queen of Cotton”.
Survivors include her son Alfred “Randy” Hicks, wife Pam, her daughter Lori Hicks-Postar, and grandchildren Sydney Hicks, Will Powers, Dalton Postar, Brent Postar and Cole Postar.
She was preceded in death by her husband Alfred in 2001.
A memorial service is scheduled for October 5th, 2022, 11 am at Wolfforth United Methodist Church, 1010 Donald Preston Dr, Wolfforth, Tx. Immediately after the service, a celebration of her life will be held at Stella’s Restaurant, 6015 82nd Street, Lubbock.
