John Wiley Thurman of Lubbock, Texas passed away on February 8, 2013 at the age of 86. Johnny was born in Quanah, Texas on April 13, 1926 and graduated from Paris High School. He joined the U.S. Air Corps in 1944 and served in WWII.
He married Mary Lo Griffin, the love of his life on September 14, 1946; they were married 66 years. He worked for Equifax as an insurance investigator for 23 years, then he was a sales representative for the Baker Company for 8 years. He retired in 1988.
Johnny enjoyed golfing, fishing and music. He was never shy about singing his favorite Elvis tune. He loved calling Lubbock his home and was a huge Texas Tech fan. He was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church for 46 years and sang in the choir. He idolized his beautiful wife who has had Alzheimer's disease for many years and faithfully visited her every day.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lo Thurman; Children, Velda Jean Jacobson and husband Rob Jacobson, Joni Renee Bell and husband Dennis Bell; Grandchildren, Carrie Wood Cunningham and husband Doug Cunningham, Kaitlyn Bell and Christopher Bell; Brother, Calvin Anderson.
Johnny is preceded in death by his Mother, Bertha Halcomb, Father, Rhea Thurman and Brother, Carlos Anderson. The family of John Thurman wishes to thank the loving owner and staff at Tanglewood Village, Accolade Home Care and Hospice and Covenant Hospital.
Visitation will be today, February 10, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in Resthaven Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Monday February 11 at 11:00 am in Cumberland Presbyterian church with burial to follow in Resthaven Memorial Park.
