Hope Read Austin, 91, of Lubbock. Born in Hillsboro, she moved to Lubbock with her parents, Charlie and Lucile Read, in 1922. Hope was a graduate of Lubbock High and Texas Tech. She married Henry W. Austin, who predeceased her in 1965. Together, they were founding members of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. They had four children, Virginia Hope York, Henry W. Austin, Jr., Lucile Warren Rogers and Margaret Ann Austin.
Hope was always active in her church, and she volunteered with West Texas Lighthouse for the Blind and St. Mary’s Hospital. She taught literacy to adults and children. Following Henry’s death she worked for many years in the placement office at Texas Tech. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. She was a faithful Christian who cherished her parish family and touched the lives of many people.
Hope is survived by her four children, twelve grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, sisters Bobbie Thompson Estes and ‘Cile Redus, and her dear friend David Lamb-Vines. A visitation will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home on Sunday, April 14, 2013 from 6 to 8 PM. Burial services will be held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 1101 Slide Road on Monday, April 15, 2013 at 1 PM.
