Darrell was born on May 28, 1937, in Hobbs, New Mexico, to Harvey and Anne (Clawson) Hackney. He married Billye Ruth Walls on December 25, 1958, in Baird, Texas. He spent his life working in the grocery business, starting out as a sack boy and eventually managed stores for Furr’s, United, and Lowe’s Supermarkets. He worked for Lowe’s up until the time of his diagnosis. He was an avid woodworker and craftsman, and loved spending time with his family, children, and grandchildren. Darrell was involved in many civic activities throughout his career such as the Lions Club in Crosbyton and the Chamber of Commerce in both Post and Childress.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, both of Hobbs; and a half-brother, Arnold Hackney of Fair Oaks, California.
Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 52 years, Billye R. Hackney of Lubbock; a brother, Norman W. Hackney of Odessa; a half-sister, Gladys Park of North Hollywood, California; daughter, Jamie Baker and husband Marion of Canyon; son, David W. Hackney of Portland, Oregon; daughter, Tammy Evans of Oshkosh, Wisconsin; grandchildren: Lake Evans of Waco, Kyle Evans (US Army Special Forces – currently deployed in Okinawa, Japan), Zachary Flores of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Grayson Hackney of Portland, Oregon, and Sara Jane Hackney of Portland, Oregon.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the caregivers of Accolade Hospice of Lubbock as they went above and beyond with the care and comfort provided to Darrell. They shared the burdens and blessings with our family the past few weeks. We would like to especially thank Amy, Vickie, Cynthia, Mark C., Mark S., and Larry for the gentle guidance and compassion they showed in their work with our family.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to The American Cancer Society or Accolade Hospice of Lubbock.
