Dorothy Danielle Barnett, age 84, went home to be with the Lord on February 20, 2024, in Lubbock, Texas. Dorothy was born on August 15, 1939, to Watler Houston Black, Sr. and Claudia Josephine Brown Black in Brownfield, Texas.
Dorothy graduated from Tom S. Lubbock High School in 1957. Dorothy worked for Southwestern Bell for 25 years. She worked in the accounting department and loved her job. It has been said that she could balance accounts to the penny and figure out problems when nobody else could.
She married her loving husband of 65 years, Richard “Dick” Meers Barnett, on March 27, 1958, in Lubbock, Texas.
Dorothy was a proud member of Southcrest Baptist Church. To those acquainted with her, she embodied devotion to Jesus, love for her family, compassion for elderly neighbors and relatives, and unparalleled baking and cooking skills. Her prowess in baking was celebrated when she proudly earned first place in an apple pie contest at The Apple Orchard.
For more than two decades, Dorothy faithfully hosted Sunday meals, extending her hospitality far beyond her immediate family. Whether it was a friend or a distant relative in need of nourishment and fellowship, Dorothy's door was always open, her table abundant with delectable dishes and desserts, accompanied by warm conversation.
Unwavering in her commitment to family and friends, Dorothy consistently went above and beyond to lend a helping hand whenever called upon. Her passions extended beyond the kitchen, encompassing a love for maintaining a tidy home, cultivating gardens, indulging in the timeless allure of John Wayne movies, the melodies of George Strait, the fervor of Texas Tech basketball, and the intrigue of both Westerns and Crime Dramas.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Claudia Black, her brother Teddie Joe Black, her sister Delphine Black Rae, and her younger brother, Eddie Wayne Black.
Dorothy will be deeply missed by her surviving family including her husband, Richard “Dick” Meers Barnett, and her three children and their families.
