Don was the beloved son of the late Kathleen Johnson McDonnell and Thad McDonnell. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Thomas Thad McDonnell. Don is survived by one son, David Nelson McDonnell. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Nancy McDonnell Harlin and Robert S Harlin, Jr who reside in Dallas, Texas, and his sister-in-law, Kayla Gaskins McDonnell of San Antonio, Texas. Nieces and nephews also survive him - Thomas Thad McDonnell, Jr of Houston, Kat McDonnell Jones (Peter Jones)of Houston, Anne Rose Clayton (Scott Clayton) of San Francisco, and Stephen Thomas Rose of Austin, Texas.
Don graduated from Levelland High School in 1981, where he was known for his enthusiasm for football and his participation in Future Farmers of America and 4-H. Not known to many, Don enjoyed writing poetry and verse and his writings remain a family treasure. Following high school, he pursued higher education at East Texas A&M University in Commerce, Texas.
For the past 35 years, Don has lived in Dallas, Texas, where he became a friendly face, while a quiet member of the East Dallas community. His warm, but shy personality and grateful spirit touched the lives of those who knew him. Don always expressed great gratitude for all those, especially those in the medical profession, who helped in his later years.
A visitation for Don will be held Friday, December 13, 2024, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Resthaven Funeral Home & Cemetery, 5740 West 19th Street. Lubbock, Texas 79407. A graveside service will occur on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 1:00 pm at Levelland Municipal Cemetery, Levelland, Texas 79336
