Funeral Services will be held at Sunset Church of Christ on Friday, December 6th at 2:00 PM, with Doug Reeves, Allan Jones, and Kirt Martin officiating. Burial will be held at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home. There will be a visitation at Resthaven Funeral Home from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM on Thursday, December 5th.
Boyd was born in Amherst, Texas, on March 29, 1945, to Freddie D Clayton and Emily Myrtle (Hawkins) Clayton. He and his family lived in Earth, Texas, and he graduated from Springlake-Earth High School in 1963. He received a B.S. degree in General Business from Abilene Christian College, Abilene, Texas, and M.A. degree from Webster College, St. Louis, Missouri. Boyd enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1967 and served in the military until 1988, retiring as a Major. During those 20 years, duty took him from San Antonio, Texas; Big Spring, Texas; Warner Robins, Georgia; Philippine Islands; Vietnam; Taiwan; Minot, North Dakota; Fairbanks, Alaska; Del Rio, Texas; Dayton, Ohio; to Wichita Falls, Texas. During his service he received numerous awards, such as Air Force Commendation Medals, Meritorious Service Medals, and Outstanding Unit Awards. After retirement from the Air Force, Boyd became a Texas State Parole Officer, serving in Abilene, Texas, for 9 years and in Lubbock, Texas, for 10 years, retiring in March 2008.
Boyd was a faithful member of Sunset Church of Christ and served his Lord Jesus Christ for many years. During his adult years, he served as a Bible teacher, a deacon, and even a song leader. Boyd is survived by his wife, Darla (Dunavant) Clayton, two sons, Eric (Veronica) Clayton and John (Susan) Clayton, two step-sons, Ryan (Anita) King and Rob (Christine) King; 8 grandchildren, Emily Clayton, Tyler Clayton, Trinity Piccolo Clayton, Lauren King, Logan Clayton, Conner Clayton, Taylor Clayton, and Aliana Clayton; sister-in-law, Ginger Clayton of Lubbock and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Jan and Roy Clark of Lubbock, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Boyd is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Wanda Lowrey, and Bonnie Davis, and his brother Norman Clayton.
The family would like to thank Grayce Enhanced Hospice Care for their support and personal care during Boyd's brief illness. The family suggests memorials be made to Sunset International Bible Institute, 3723 34th St., Lubbock, Texas 79410, in lieu of flowers.
