Bill Smith was born in 1934 in Cache Valley, Utah, to Everett (Bill) and Catherine (Bessie) Smith. He died July 25, 2024, of natural causes at age 90. He was a kind, considerate, and brilliant man, loved dearly by his family. He gathered friends throughout his life and anyone who knew him respected and loved him.
As a boy, Bill enjoyed playing baseball, football, ice hockey, and going deer and pheasant hunting. He worked hard on his father’s dry farm and helped with the cows. He worked at Pitcher’s service station as a teenager and knew everyone in town. When Bill got old enough, he started working in the summers for his uncle Jack Parson for his road construction business. He also worked hard in school and was an excellent student. Whatever Bill Smith did, he gave it his all and did his best.
Bill’s love for science and math led him away from the farming tradition of his ancestors and into an electrical engineering degree at Utah State Agricultural College. He secured a position with Hewlett Packard and added a master’s degree from Stanford University.
Bill joined the Army ROTC in college. After graduation from Stanford, he worked as the Engineering Evaluation Officer for the Sargent Missile System at White Sands Missile Range, in White Sands, New Mexico.
After his Army service, Bill returned to Hewlett Packard to work for the brand-new Loveland Instrument Division of HP in Loveland, Colorado. Bill had an illustrious 30-year career at HP, followed by several years of consulting.
Bill married Dorothy in 1954, during his college years. They enjoyed 70 wonderful years together. They are the parents of four children: Jeff, Cindy, Susan, and Michelle. Bill and Dorothy have 13 grandchildren and over 20 great-grandchildren, all of whom are very precious to them.
Bill is survived by his wife and all his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
