He was born December 22, 1923 in Corbin, KY, the son of Amos and Nellie Scalf.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Janette Scalf; and brothers, Vernon, Ned and Jim Scalf.
William retired as a Command Sargent Major from the United States Army after 30 years of faithful service during World War II and the Vietnam War. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Air Medal for his service in Vietnam, in addition to numerous other awards and medals. He was a life member of VFW Post 1410, Corbin, KY, American Legion Post 0200, Louisville, KY and also a life member of NCOA – Non Commissioned Officers Association.
Survivors include a son, Bill Scalf, Jr. (Carol); a daughter, Diana Ward (Dan); 6 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Floyd and Ohler Scalf; and a sister, Betty Posten.
A service to celebrate his life will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 in the chapel of Arch L. Heady and Son at Westport Village, 7410 Westport Rd. Entombment will follow at Louisville Memorial Gardens East. Visitation will be from 4-8 PM on Monday at the funeral home.
