He is predeceased by his parents, Layman and Dorothy Knight of Nashville, TN and daughter Terrill “Terry” Vaughne Knight of Austin, TX.
David is survived by his wife of 59 years, Martha King (Freeland); daughter Nicole Woodhouse (Chris), his beloved grandchildren: Kate and John Woodhouse of Louisville, KY; Isabelle, Amelia and Eloise Durr of Austin, TX. He is also survived by his sister Jane Hickman (Glenn) of Greenbriar, TN and much-loved nieces and nephews.
David was born on September 8, 1942 to Layman and Dorothy Knight in Murfreesboro, TN. David graduated from Isaac Litton High School in Nashville, and went on to study engineering at Tennessee Tech University.
David met his future wife, Martha in college and they settled in Louisville in 1964 where David began his career at American Air Filter. David’s career took the family to the metro-Detroit area in 1976 where he continued his long career in industrial air pollution and control. David and Marti remained in Lathrup Village, MI until 2021 when they returned to Louisville.
David gained his love of fishing on excursions with his father at Dale Hollow in Tennessee and expanded that to fly fishing in Jackson Hole, salmon fishing in Lake Michigan and at least once a year in Canada with the guys.
His prowess at rally racing built a devotion to both NASCAR and Formula One. He enjoyed the Detroit Grand Prix and was a devoted sponsor.
Working at American Air Filter, he discovered that Churchill Downs was just a quick walk away and a great way to spend lunch. The Daily Racing Form is built for the engineering mindset and became a fixture in his briefcase.
Cremation was chosen.
