Mickey was born on November 21,1951 to Bill and Virginia Higgins in New Albany, Indiana. After graduating from New Albany High School in 1969, he studied at IU (partying 101) before joining the United States Air Force, where he served four years.
Mickey never met a stranger, which served him well when he took a job working for his Uncle Joe at the Convenient Food Mart in Hikes Point. There he met the love of his live, Mary Jo Greenwell. Mary Jo's Mom tried to convince Mickey he didn't want to marry her because as her Mom put it..."She's a bi__h!" With Mary Jo happily agreeing with her Mom! Mickey married her anyway. They were married over 40 years.
Mickey lived one day at a time. He was a mentor to all that knew him. He loved to laugh (even at himself). He was a loving Son, Husband, Brother, Father and Grandfather. Mickey's grandson Liam was the light of his life.
After Michael was born, Mickey got a job with the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier. He retired with over 30 years of service.
Mickey was an excellent role model showing Michael how to be a good Dad and spouse.
He was an active member of St. Martha Catholic Church where he was involved in Lip Sych, coaching Michael in many different sports, and volunteering with the Boy Scouts. One of Mickey's greatest honors was becoming Scoutmaster and seeing Michael achieve his rank of Eagle.
He had a heart of gold. He loved all animals, especially the many GRRAND dogs and stray kittens he and Mary Jo adopted.
Not only was he an avid IU fan, but he was also an avid Boston Red Sox fan. His other love was his little red truck!
Mickey is predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo; son, Michael (Tynita), grandson (Liam), and step grandchildren, Brayden and Laura; brother, Denny (Sandy); sisters, Karen (Mike Pearce), Diane Laslie, and Cathy Higgins; multiple cousins, nieces, nephews, and Aunt JoAnn.
A very special "Thank You" to Mickey's caregiver Chris Starke who was there for every need that might have arisen.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made to GRRAND (Golden Retriever Rescue and Adoption of Needy Dogs), Alzheimer's Association, or Hospice in Mickey's name.
Also the family would like bright and cheery clothing to be worn to celebrate Mickey's life!
A visitation will be held at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven Funeral Home 4400 Bardstown Road Louisville, Kentucky 40218 on Monday, July 29 from 11AM to 1:30PM. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel at 1:30PM. Mickey will be laid to rest in Resthaven Memorial Park after military honors.
