Robert L. Young, formerly of Louisville, died at his home on Monday, August 23, 2021. He was born in the west end of Louisville, the only child of Anthony “Ike” Young and Anna Lucille Wheatley. He was a 1950 graduate of DuPont Manual High School, where he was on the basketball and track teams, a graduate of the University of Louisville and attended the MBA program at the University of North Carolina - Greensboro. After graduation he started his professional career at Corning Glass (Corning Inc.), Indian Head Inc. and the last 18 years at Miller Brewing Co. (div. of Philip Morris), where he retired as a corporate engineering executive in 1992. In 1988 he received the Philip Morris “Silver Ring” award for meritorious service.
He was a Navy Aviation veteran of the Korean War, his last assignment was flight crew member in Fighter Squadron 14.
He was the past President of LaGrange Rotary Club, Rotarian of the Year and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was past member of Reidsville, North Carolina Elks Club, the Harrodsburg, KY. Jaycees, mentor and advisor for East St. Louis, Illinois Junior Achievement, past part time member of SCORE and a Kentucky Colonel.
He was a former thoroughbred horse owner and past member of Director for Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners. He performed pro bono engineering services for Custom Quality Services (now known as Workwell Industries), where he was a board member and past Vice Chairman.
He was a three time cancer survivor, plus surviving an explosion on the aircraft carrier USS Bennington in 1954 and a hotel fire in New York in 1980, but he couldn’t dodge this last bullet. His life was enhanced by his wife, Sandy, who was his inspiration, and by his side with love and support.
He is preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Louise J. Kinderman Young.
Robert is survived by his loving wife Sandra Lilley, daughters, Stephanie Weber, Susan Lewis (Brad), Robin Noyes (Brian) and sons, Keith Young and David Young (Lynn), grandchildren, Mike and Jacob Weber, Anna Otto Shroyer, Ian, Jason and Samuel Young, Jordan and Jack David Young, Coleman and Ruby Lewis, Nathan Noyes and Samantha Besler. Great grandchildren, Lucy, Clara, August and Oscar Otto, Maxwell, Maddie Rose Weber, Evelyn Rose Young, Selene Besler. Great neighbors and best friends, Kenny and Connie Taylor.
Guests are invited to attend a visitation from 3-8 pm on Thursday, August 26, 2021 at Arch L. Heady - Cralle funeral Home, 2428 Frankfort Ave. A mass of Christian burial will be conducted on Friday 10am at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church, 1020 Burnett Ave with interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
