Robert Brian Heckel,42, left this world August 7, 2014, after his body succumbed to cancer.Brian was born in Louisville November 1, 1971, to Edward R. Heckel Jr. and Mary Hayes Heckel and was big brother to Kari Ann. He graduated from St X in 1989. After earning a B.A. in English from UK, he married Bethany Yates Heckel Oct. 18, 1997.
With little money but a wealth of laughter and shared interests, they built careers and nourished joint passions for camping at Nolin Lake, music, conversation and the Highlands. He worked in the UofL A&S Dean's Office 2004-2013, where he was admired for his creativity, loyalty and wit.Brian's family and friends cherish their memories of this unique man, who vacillated between curmudgeon and fierce protector of those he loved. Brian enjoyed nothing better than a healthy debate about politics, literature, media or philosophy. He despised inequity and defended the defenseless. Brian enjoyed the beach, bourbon, brews and bands.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Bethany, and their dog, Guinness; parents Ed and Mary; sister Kari (Josh) Schaudt; in-laws Bill and Sharon Yates; sister-in-law Amanda (Aaron) Miller and nephews Nicholas, Nathan and niece Natalie; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and friends whose lives are left quieter and less interesting without him. The family is grateful for the care Brian received from Hosparus and for the support of friends.
Memorial donations to Hosparus of Louisville. The family will have a private service handled by Resthaven. A celebration of Brian's life will be announced at a later date. -
