Dick was born October 15, 1922 in Louisville to the late Milford C. and Odessa Royer Harvin. He graduated from DuPont Manual High School in the class of 1940. He received his bachelor and master degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Louisville’s J. B. Speed Scientific School, where he did wartime research for the U.S. government and taught.
Dick continued his research and completed his PhD at the University of Florida, Gainesville, where he became a tenured faculty member teaching mathematics and engineering. In 1955, Dick joined C&I Girdler, later acquired by Bechtel Corp., from which he retired after 43 years in business and chemical engineering.
Dick was a member for over 60 years of Crescent Hill Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, and Trustee, and on various committees. He was also active in the Kiwanis Club of Louisville.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, and brother William M. Harvin, and sister-in-law Margaret Pleune Harvin.
Dick is survived by his loving wife of 70 years Elizabeth (Libby) Murphy Harvin, his devoted daughter Christie Harvin Owens (F. Joseph Owens, Jr.), and his two granddaughters Charlotte Campbell Owens and Elizabeth Owens Packard (Ryan Russell Packard).
Services to celebrate the life of Dick Harvin, will be held at 1:00 pm Friday at Crescent Hill Baptist Church, 2800 Frankfort Ave. with interment at Cave Hill . Visitation will be held after 11:00 am Friday at the church.
Expressions of sympathy are requested to the memorial fund at Crescent Hill Baptist Church.
