She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward E. Garrett and Susie Garrett Lawler, and her brother, Edward Garrett II.
A graduate of Mercy Academy, Paula went on to receive an Associate’s Degree in Business Management from Sullivan University. She was an Assistant Supervisor with the Office of the Jefferson County Circuit Court Clerk, where she worked for twenty-four years.
Throughout her life, Paula cultivated a sense of humor that was both dry and joyous, a good-spirited, jabbing humor which she held onto through thick and thin. Paula was a crucial part of the village that raised her nephews, who meant the world to her, and she was her mother’s devoted, years-long caregiver until the end. She was a proud survivor of breast cancer, dragging her friends and family out of their beds at dawn to participate in the Race for the Cure. A sports enthusiast, she managed pit concessions for years at the Louisville Motor Speedway, if only to get closer to the action.
She was known as “cool Aunt Paula” for expanding her nephews’ horizons with her love of art, literature, and music. Her compassion for children extended beyond family in the seven years she served as a preschool teacher at Bright Expectations.
Paula’s legacy continues in the lives of her family, co-workers, and neighbors. She is survived by her brother, James Garrett, her sister-in-law, Cheryl Garrett, her beloved niece, Jennifer, and her beloved nephews, John, Greg, David, and Jeremy.
A memorial service will be held in Paula’s honor on Friday, December 29th at 12pm at the Arch L. Heady Funeral Home at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road.
