Louis Frederick Davis

Louis Frederick Davis (Fred as known by his friends and family) passed away at the age of 75 at Norton Hospital of Louisville, Ky on Nov 25, 2011. Fred was born in Peoria, IL. on August 8th, 1936 to Florence and Ollie Davis. He was awarded a full sports scholarship and graduated from Bradley University in Peoria where he was a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity. He was a gifted baseball player (pitcher) and helped lead the Bradley Baseball team of 1956 to the College World Series. Following graduation, he continued to play semi-pro ball in central Illinois as well as a season of pro baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals minor league team. In 1994, he and his team were inducted into the Bradley University Sports Hall of Fame.

He married his life-long sweetheart Marguerite Claes on June 25, 1960 where they enjoyed the next 51 years of marriage together to his last days. Together they had two sons, Scott and Eric Davis. Following his marriage to Marguerite, he began a 40 year career in the furniture industry. He excelled in sales and marketing and was a top producer for several leading companies including Broyhill, Ashley, and England Furniture. During this time, he received numerous awards and distinctions for his outstanding abilities and productivity.

Fred will be remembered by those who knew him for his lively and boisterous personality, his love of good conversation and humorous repartee. He maintained a passionate interest in business, politics, sports (especially tennis), and travel. He was proud of the fact that he travelled to all 50 states and to 6 of the 7 continents. He cherished time spent with family and with friends on the tennis court, especially the “Super Seniors” tennis group at the Blairwood Club. Fred was a long term member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church where he served on vestry and various church committees.

Fred is survived by his wife Marguerite and his son Scott Davis of Monterey, Ca. He was preceded in death by parents Ollie and Florence Davis and son Eric Davis.

Special thanks go to the Doctors and staff of University Hospital, Kindred Hospital, and Norton Hospital who tended to his needs throughout his final illness. Also deep thanks and gratitude go out to all Fred’s friends who have helped with everything throughout this process.

A memorial service and internment of ashes will be held at St Thomas Episcopal Church 9616 Westport Road, on Thursday, December 1, at 2:00 PM, followed by a reception for family and friends in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials or donations be made to Fred’s favorite organizations – The West End School, the Salvation Army, or St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
