Linda Leigh Rembowski, 77, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away to her heavenly home on February 12, 2023. Linda was a native Louisvillian, born at home to Melvin and Myrtle Doreck. A favorite childhood memory was living at the Bell’s Lane Junkyard during her elementary years, along with her two sisters, pretending to drive around the United States in a junk Cadillac convertible and decorating a clubhouse in an old milk truck with discarded items they found. She was forever grateful for the fifth-grade teacher that never gave up until Linda could read. After overcoming dyslexia, she was an avid reader of novels, especially historical fiction. She loved to tell of being skilled at roller skating atop the fourteen-inch-wide Ohio River flood wall as a young teen, although it was forbidden.
Linda lived most of her life in Louisville with the exception of eight years (1970s) she spent in Marengo and Jeffersonville, Indiana. She married in 1963 and later always prioritized raising her four children as a single mother. She attended Theodore Ahrens Trade School where she excelled in their dressmaking program. She went on to be an accomplished seamstress in many capacities throughout her life. Linda’s careers always seemed to include taking care of others: working as a nurse’s aide, school cafeteria cook, nutrition counselor, home health and hospice caregiver, and various cashier positions. She proudly graduated at the top of her class in phlebotomy school (1980s.) She loved to be a poll worker every election day. Linda was very creative and enjoyed flower arranging, cross stitch, paper quilling, making wedding bouquets, elaborate gift bows, and Christmas ornaments, cooking and canning, baking holiday cookies, playing in family bunco and poker games, and Scrabble, and going out for coffee with friends. She was very talented at feeding a crowd, shopping and cooking for church dinners and family weddings. She started to handwrite her life story and dreamed of getting it published someday. Linda survived cancer twice, most recently breast cancer in 2020.
Linda treasured memories of her maternal grandparents, Margie L and Richard T Smith, having lived on their Indiana farm for five years as a young mother of four.
She was a resident of Highland Court Apartments for 24 years. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, and prior member of Colgate Baptist Church, Rockford Lane Baptist Church, and Audubon Park Baptist Church, with many treasured friends from each one.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Myrtle Doreck; her older sister, Juanita Gail Wilson; and most recently, her daughter, Donna Kay Reck (12/2022).
She is survived by her "baby" sister, Janice M Doreck; children, Juanita “Jan” Basham (Mike), Charles “Chuck” M Rembowski Jr. (Debbie), Stephen Matthew Rembowski (Carole); son-in-law, Sean Reck; grandchildren, Timothy Rembowski (Sondra), Samantha Reck, Nathan Basham, Sarah Basham, Matthew Reck, William Rembowski, Daniel Rembowski, Elizabeth Rembowski; great-grandchildren, Mason Roy Basham, Reese Rembowski, Maeve Rembowski; nephew, Melvin Hess (Joanie); niece, Shelley Puckett; great nieces and nephews, Josh F, Josh P, Jacob, Lorin, Robert, Keith, Peyton; cousins throughout the United States.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday February 25, 2023, at Bethany Baptist Church, 2319 Taylorsville Rd, Louisville, Kentucky, followed by a Celebration Luncheon in the fellowship hall until 3:00p.m.
In lieu of flowers, Linda has requested for donations to be made to Crusade for Children in her honor.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Arch L. Heady at Resthaven of Louisville, Kentucky.
