Lillian Chawner Gish passed away at age 93, February, 10, 2017. Lillian was born September 6, 1923 in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, England. She was the youngest of six children. She was preceded in death by her parents, John William and Gertrude Bromley Chawner, her five siblings, Johnny, George, Arthur, Sylvia and Hilda, and her husband, Herman Gish, Jr. Lillian is survived by three children, Glen (Paula), Gary (Janet) and Karen (Jim Spinks), her six grandchildren, Trevor (Carla), Brent (Renee), Caytie (Wes Sanders), Jennifer (Jeremy Doner), Christian and Jordan, four great-grandchildren, Ava, Gavin, Chawner, and Adiah, and brother-in-law Willis Averill from England. After a whirlwind courtship, they were married on June 6, 1945, in England; shortly after, Lillian travelled by herself on the Queen Mary to join her beloved Herman in the United States, leaving her entire family behind. They lived in Texas, Oklahoma, Indiana and New York, but their deepest roots were in Louisville, Kentucky.
Lillian was a homemaker and loved to golf, bowl and cheer for the Louisville Cardinals. She and Herman always held annual Derby Parties with friends and family. She was a member of Wildwood Country Club, Watkins Methodist Church, a resident of Brownsboro Park Retirement Community and most recently The Episcopal Church Home.
Lillian will be remembered for being very set in her ways, never quite losing her British accent, her passion for "boiling hot tea", being Nannie, and her love for her family.
Visitation will be 3-7 pm Thursday, at Arch L Heady Funeral Home, 7410 Westport Road, and Funeral Service on Friday at 11:00 am, with entombment to follow at Louisville Memorial Gardens East.
Thanks to the Norton Brownsboro Hospital for her last days of care. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Greater Kentucky and Southern Indiana.
