Left to cherish Larry's memory is his loving wife of 47 years, Sharon Cecilia Duke Shepherd; daughters, Christie Pennington (Josh), Casey Kelty (Katie); sister, Carole Liedtke (Joe); granddaughter, Rylee Pennington; grandson, Shepherd Kelty; and loving nieces, nephews and friends.
As a kid, Larry was fun, active and into all things sports. In his teenage years, he met Sharon before heading off to college at EKU. In college, Larry majored in Law Enforcement and minored in pinball, goofing off and all intramural sports.
After graduating from EKU in 1977, Larry returned to Louisville where he married Sharon and tried his hand at a few different occupations, including park ranger and federal correctional officer, before finding his home as a letter carrier at United States Postal Service Branch 14. Larry would spend 26 years at USPS, where he would eventually become a Union Steward and a Vice President of the National Association of Letter Carriers.
During this time, Larry also enjoyed coaching softball for his church’s league. Rumor has it that he used the family car to drag the field to prepare for games. When not ruining the car, Larry always looked forward to the annual family trip to the Beach Waterpark in Cincinnati.
After retirement in 2014, Larry dedicated his time to his loved ones. Rarely was there a softball game, soccer game or musical where Larry was not in attendance to support his grandchildren. He will forever be their biggest fan.
When Larry wasn’t volunteering at Rylee’s school or watching Shep play soccer, he enjoyed cheering on the Cards. You could often spot Larry, or more likely hear him, at many UofL baseball, basketball or volleyball matches. You wouldn’t have to look much further than his wardrobe of red and black to know he knew all the words to “All Hail UofL.”
Ultimately, Larry lost his battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer after nearly two years of fight. One of his last acts of selflessness was to be part of a cancer treatment trial, thus allowing researchers to continue to improve medicinal options for future patients.
A visitation for Larry will be held on Monday, May 13, 2024 from 3 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Evergreen Funeral Home, 4623 Preston Highway, Louisville, Kentucky 40213. Visitation will resume on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 from 10 a.m. until the time of service. A Celebration of Larry's life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Larry will be laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery.
Larry will be remembered for his big personality, kind heart, grit and adoration of his loved ones.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested gifts be made to the Brown Cancer Center (https://give.uoflhealthfoundation.org).
