He was born in Fairbury, Illinois, the third of seven children to Richard and Nell Humphrey who predeceased him. Kenneth grew up in southern Kentucky where he met and married his wife of 68 years, Dorothy Jane Parsons in Franklin, Kentucky, on August 28, 1948. After living for a brief time in Detroit, Michigan, Kenneth and Dorothy moved to Louisville where they raised two children. He worked for General Electric for over ten years. After leaving General Electric, Kenneth with his wife Dorothy, worked together to build a successful business as owners of several Dollar General Stores that they operated, until their retirement. Kenneth and Dorothy attended Living Hope Baptist Church.
Kenneth was an avid University of Louisville sports fan and for many years did not miss a home basketball game no matter the weather. He always made sure that his friend, Johnny Wise, had a ticket and a ride to the games. He loved fishing with his buddies, Bill and Don, attending and watching NASCAR events especially with his favorite driver, Dale Earnhart, vacations in Daytona Beach, Florida, and telling stories to his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Kenneth was a loving, gentle and compassionate person who cared deeply about his family, friends, and employees. He is survived by his devoted wife, Dorothy, his daughter Darlene (Wayne) Ramsey, son, Kenneth Todd (Melissa) Humphrey, his grandchildren, Anthony (Kierra) Ramsey, Allison (Kevin) Matlock, Sydney Humphrey and Hunter Humphrey and four great granddaughters, Marley and Charley Matlock, Lilyan Cummins, and Lexus Ramsey. Although his older brother Harold Humphrey, and his younger sister Berniece Sneed, predeceased him, he is survived by two sisters, Alene (Hubert) Craddock, and Lou Ellen (Bill) Cain, and two brothers, William (Carolyn) Humphrey, and Leland (Berniece) Humphrey, as well as many loving nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Humphrey will be held at 12 p.m. on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Arch L. Heady, 4400 Bardstown Road followed by interment at Beth Haven Cemetery.
Visitation is Wednesday, October 19, 2016 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
