In addition to her parents, David F. Uppinghouse, Jr., and Mary Uppinghouse, Kari is also survived by her adoring husband of 8 years, Dusty VerHey; stepdaughters Stela VerHey and Celia VerHey; sister Amy Stevens (Nate); nieces and nephews Caden and Taylor; and a host of extended family and friends.
Kari loved the game of soccer and started playing at the age of 10. She started her college soccer career at George Mason in Fairfax, VA. As a freshman, she started in the midfield and that team went on to play in the NCAA finals against Mia Hamm and the Tarheels of NC. She finished her final 3 years of collegiate soccer at the University of Nebraska where she became Nebraska’s 1st Division One All American recipient, was named the Big 12 Player of the Year, and was also invited to the US Women’s National Team Camp. Kari also went on to play professional soccer in New York. Kari then spent most of her career in the insurance and healthcare consulting field. Kari was an avid dog lover and adored her 4 pups: Pula, Malin, Atley, and Peitan. Since arriving into the Lake Forest neighborhood, she also picked up the game of golf and enjoyed getting out with her husband and neighborhood friends. Kari loved traveling and creating lasting memories with her family and friends, especially if it involved Disney World with her stepdaughters or nieces and nephews. Kari was a bright light full of life, love and had a genuine care for anyone she would meet. She was an amazing wife, daughter, stepmom, sister, aunt, cousin, niece and a loyal friend who brought so much joy to so many. We will miss our sweet Kari.
