Judy was born on September 14, 1942, in LaGrange, Kentucky.
She was a member of Ninth and O Baptist Church of Louisville Kentucky. Judy loved attending the bible studies and spending time with her Christian family and going to Southern Gospel concerts. She was a graduate from Oldham County High School in 1960. She loved school, as a little girl she wanted to be a schoolteacher. She had perfect attendance for eleven years; she wasn’t tardy or absent one time. She married Arthur George Townsend, Jr. Together they had three children: Arthur George Townsend, III, Judy Annett Townsend, and John Wayne Townsend. Judy worked for the Board of Education Oldham County as a social worker for the head start program from 1970-1985.
After the children were grown, Judy attended the Sullivan College and graduated in 2000 with a business degree. Judy began working in the medical field in 1978 and continued until 2006 when she retired. Judy had many hobbies, she enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Kentuckian Square Dance Association for over forty years. She was very loyal to her many positions in the association. She served on the executive board from June 2001 to June 2005, August 2012 to June 2015, and June 2016 to October 2017. Judy also served as KSDA President from 2004 to 2005 and from 2012 to 2013. She loved to travel to festivals and conventions where she would make new lifelong friends.
Judy is preceded in death by her husband; James Mathus; parents, Marion G. Nowlin and Gathie Gay Cockrell; grandparents, Clarence Cockrell and Cynthia (Boren) Cockrell; daughter, Judy Annett Townsend; half-brother, Larry Nowlin; father of her children, Arthur George Townsend Jr.; and her two sisters, Artie Mullins and Rita Riggs.
Judy is survived by her two sons, Arthur George Townsend III(Tina) of Milton, KY and John Wayne Townsend (Martha) of Jeffersonville, IN. Along with her stepson Steve Mathus (Arlene) of Conway, South Carolina;two half sisters, Linda Copland (Tim) of Madison, IN, and Linda Goins of Deputy, IN, one half brothers, Marion G. Nowlin (Ann) of Jacksonville, FL, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A visitation for Judy will be held Thursday, November 21, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40218, followed by a funeral service at 4:00 PM.
