James proudly served for 25 years with the Louisville Fire Department, retiring as a sergeant. He was also a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, where he earned a Purple Heart for his bravery and service to our country. After his military service, James earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Louisville. An athlete at heart, he played football and basketball at Flaget High School, where he helped lead the basketball team to a state championship in 1960. His love for sports continued throughout his life, especially through his passion for cycling.
A man of deep Catholic faith, James was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He cherished his family and touched countless lives with his kindness, strength, and unwavering support. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Sally Montgomery. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Carol Jean Montgomery; his daughters, Ronetta Todd (Michael) and Natasha Montgomery-Vincent (Christopher); his siblings, Robert Montgomery (Helen), Catherine Hurt, Jeanette Garvin, George Montgomery, and Michael Montgomery; his cherished grandchildren, Darrien Todd, Mya Todd, and Nyla and Nicholas Vincent; and many beloved extended family members.
A visitation for James will be held Thursday, October 10, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40218. A Mass of Christian Burial will occur Friday, October 11, 2024 at 10:00 AM, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 7500 Tangelo Dr. Louisville, KY 40228. An interment will occur Friday, October 11, 2024 at Calvary Cemetery, 1600 Newburg Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40205.
