Harold was born on June 8, 1934 in Campbellsburg, Indiana to the late Frank & Vashti (Thomas) Purkhiser. He served his nation with pride and honor in the United States Army, enlisting in the winter of 1956 serving until the winter of 1958, and was a Military Policeman. He was a marksman on a rifle, an expert with a pistol, a sharpshooter with a carbine, and earned the Good Conduct Medal.
After his military service, Harold worked in the auto industry for many years, at one point owning a dealership, Purkhiser Oldsmobile in Corydon, Indiana. He also worked as a New Car Sales Manager for many years. For the last 10 years, he worked for Hilton Garden Inn as a shuttle driver. He was a member of the Kenwood Church of Christ and served as a song leader for many years. He and his wife, Nell, also loved to travel, attending many Bluegrass Festivals.
Harold is preceded in death by his parents, Frank & Vashti (Thomas) Purkhiser; and his first wife, Mary Elizabeth (Hinton) Purkhiser.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 22 years, Nell (Cash) Purkhiser; children, Jennifer (Ken) Mason, Jonathan (Jill) Purkhiser; grandchildren, Emily (Nick) Hoffman, Katherine Mason, Alex (Jessie) Mason, Drew (McKenzie) Purkhiser, Cassie (John) Barrett; great – grandchildren, Levi Hoffman, Callie Hoffman; sisters, Hilda (Von) Greene and Henrietta (Ken) Mauck, plus a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his passing.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, June 18, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. in the Dignity Chapel of the Evergreen Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 17, 2021 from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. and then again on Friday, June 18, 2021 from 10:00 – until the hour of service at 12:00 p.m. also at the Evergreen Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery & Garden Mausoleums.
