She was born February 3, 1928 in Casey County, KY, the daughter of Herbert and Mary Richards. She is preceeded in death by them and her husband of 58 years, E. Porter Harned, who was retired from AXA-Equitable.
She was a "retired" Teacher at Waggener High School, to become the most honorable occupation of full-time mother, wife, and homemaker after the birth of her second child.
She graduated from University of Kentucky in 1951 with a B.A. in Education, but also was a fan of the University of Louisville Cardinals!
She was active in her church, Southeast Christian Church, since 1973 as a member and in choir. Prior to that she sang on college campuses and at other churches where she resided. She was a pianist and also was Miss Casey County in 1948, and competed as a regional queen to enter the Miss KY Contest later. After her illness in 2005, she continued her singing to the enjoyment of others who she came in contact with and who were around her.
She was also an active member in the Daughters of the American Revolution and past regent of the local John Marshall chapter. She was also an active member of the Daughters of the Union, of the local Cyrus Grable chapter. She volunteered hundreds of hours at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center in Louisville and tried to encourage the veterans there she came into contact with.
In addition to this, she was civic-minded and wrote letters of support and encouragement to political leaders but also letters of polite disagreement if she felt like an upcoming law to be voted on was not the best for KY and the country.
She leaves to a legacy of strong faith for her son, Philip Lee Harned; her daughter, Ellen Harned Minturn (Joseph) and grandchildren Mikael Samuel Minturn and Natasha Harned Minturn. Also dear to her heart were her friends and family from Casey County and her husband's family originally from Bullitt/Nelson County.
2 Tmothy 4:7 ....I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
