Dorothy Fowle Cornett Tayse passed away at the age of 89 at her home in Jacksonville, FL on Wednesday, March 16, 2011. She was born September 21, 1921 in Louisville, KY where she lived for many years. As a child she enrolled in the Louisville branch of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, and while still in her preteen years, she entered the University of Louisville music program. Her parents played the piano and drums for the silent movies which is probably where she got her love for music. After the end of her sophomore year she took two big steps: she married her first husband, Leonard Cornett, and went to work as an Air Force Inspector for the Curtiss Wright plant in Louisville where she remained until the end of WWII. After two and half years of marriage, her husband was inducted into the Army during WWII where he was killed in France the following year. After the war, she enrolled in the Comptometer School (the comptometer was the “computer” of its day). She later taught the technology at night and worked for the IRS during the day. After that, she went to work for Remington Rand where she moved to Boston and New York during her employment. She subsequently worked for the Louisville & Nashville Railroad (L&N) for many years . During this period she met and married her second husband, William Tayse, who was the photographer for the L&N.
She was an accomplished organist and held the position of organist/choir director at Edenside Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, in Louisville and remained in that post until she moved to Jacksonville. She and her husband were transferred to Jacksonville where she later took a job with Coast Line (later CSX). She was active in church choir work and did substitute organ work at numerous churches in Jacksonville, including a “long and loving relationship” with the First Church of Christ, Scientist. She also became a member and was very active in Friday Musicale, serving on the Board as both Secretary and Chaplain.
She was preceded in death by her her parents, her husband, her brother and nephew. She is survived by her niece, Diane (Tom) Denny of Chandler, Arizona , three step-children, Jeffrey Tayse of Jacksonville, FL, Steven (Beverly) Tayse of Louisville, KY, Valerie Tayse (Dave)Videtto of Louisville, KY, and a cousin, Clifford (Rose) Haley of Shepherdsville, KY. There are numerous great nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren who will miss her greatly.
There will be a memorial service in Louisville, KY at a later date. The family requests any donations be made to Edenside Christian Church in Louisville, KY or the Community Hospice of NE Florida in Jacksonville, FL
