Bette Strange, a cherished former teacher, devoted family member, and beloved friend, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2024, at the age of 82. Born on October 17, 1941, Bette's life was marked by kindness, thoughtfulness, and a gentle spirit that touched everyone she knew.
Bette's journey began as the daughter of Ted and Lou Orthober, and she grew up alongside her siblings Margie and James, all of whom preceded her in death. Her loving husband, Marion Strange, with whom she shared many adventures including traveling to Europe, going to the Masters and attending UofL games with their Parrish house friends, preceded her in death, leaving a legacy of love and cherished memories. Bette's warmth and affection extended to her family, including her nephews Brian Ward (Katie), Jason (Sara) Orthober, Josh Orthober; her niece Sarah (Justin) Rosenbaum; and her great-nieces and great-nephews Nicholas (Laura), Hannah, Jack, Sam, Lola, and Oliver. And many more nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who were blessed to have known her. She also leaves her special friends Ann Hager and Ginger Smythe
Bette Strange's legacy is one of love, family, and community service. Her life was a tapestry of meaningful connections and acts of generosity that will continue to resonate with all who knew her. As we mourn her passing, we also celebrate the extraordinary life she led and the profound impact she had on so many.
Bette's intellectual curiosity and passion for education led her to the University of Louisville, where she earned a Master's degree that paved the way for a fulfilling 27-year career as a teacher at Jeffersontown Elementary. She was a guiding light to countless students, inspiring them with her wisdom and nurturing their growth with patience and care.
Beyond the classroom, Bette was deeply involved in her community. Her volunteer work with Saint Thomas and Saint Martin of Tours, the Golden Arrow, and Friends of the Library, Fern Creek reflected her commitment to service and her desire to make a difference. She was a familiar and welcome presence in these circles, always ready to lend a helping hand and share a warm smile.
Bette's interests were as rich and varied as her life. An avid reader, she found joy and solace in the pages of books, and she shared this love by taking her nieces and nephews to cultural events and fun adventures, one of which was the cherished holiday tradition of "The Nutcracker." Her zest for life and her caring nature were evident in these outings, which often became treasured family memories.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bette's memory may be made to Down Syndrome of Louisville; Golden Arrow; and Alzheimer's Association.
A visitation for Bette will be held Monday, October 14, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40218. A funeral mass will occur Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at 10:00 AM at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 5505 Bardstown Rd., Louisville, KY 40291.
