I am so very sad to learn about Steven's death.  I live in San Francisco now and had not seen Steven in many years, but I googled him when I saw a house he had designed for sale...I was shocked to read that he had died.  I went out with Steven a few times in the early 90s.  We met on the boardwalk in Ocean Park..he on Rollerblades and me baking in the sun trying to pull off being a surfer.  I loved talking to him about design and architecture, but I mostly liked his sense of humor and kind soul.  I would run into him around town and he would look at me with a kind of smirk as if he had something very funny to tell me.  That always put me in a good mood. 

I know that much time has passed now, but my heart goes out to his family and friends.

I have just been made aware of this news.  Steven meant so much to me I can not put it into words.  He took me into his home in Dallas when I had nowhere else to go.  He had the most beautiful blue eyes and the softest, kindest personality.  You simply could not help yourself from loving him.  My heart is broken today.  Even in his early twenties, Steven had an amazing confidence in his abilities and had no doubt he would be a world respected architect.  I followed his career enough to know that he was correct in that belief.  To his parents who I am sure do not remember meeting me at their home so many years ago, I send my condolences at this late date.

One year ago today our world changed forever. We miss you every day.

I was stevens neice i had a huge pleaser fir being my uncle i live in the house he had designed my mom was stvens twin and it kills us very day that he is not here with us but i love him with all my heart and i love him tell i die

Steven and I shared a passion for cars, specifically BMW's.  I had the pleasure of ordering 4 of his last cars for him.  He was so looking forward to ordering the new M3.  The smile on his face each time he got a new car was extra special for me.  He would drive all the way to Orange County to work with me.  He was a treasure and I will miss him dearly.

I had the pleasure of working with Steven on a few different projects. He was truly such a nice and warm person, and such an amazingly talented architect. He will be missed, but his great work will live on forever.

We enjoyed the times we spent with Steven and the Shortridges.  He was a great talent, and a welcoming friend.

I had the pleasure of being Steven's executive assistant for a few years.He was very talented. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. One of my tasks was to take Tucker for a walk when he was in the office. Tucker is really going to miss him.

I met Steven at his magical home in Venice,CA. A cottage warmly restored and redesigned to perfection. He was a welcome and lively presence in this village by the sea.  Thanks, Steven

"I worked with Steven for several years and we grew to be good friends.  We live on the same canal in Venice and would see each other almost every day on his way for the AM coffee.  I loved and adored him and he has a very special space in my heat.  A talent this world shall miss.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all family and friends of Steve. I always looked forward to seeing my cousin when the opportunity presented itself. Those times were few and far between... But I always enjoyed the times we did have. He was very thoughtful and caring. He will be missed greatly.

I have so many good memories of Steve. We were housemates in college and had a lot of adventures and fun, hilarious times in those days. He was a great friend and had a significant influence on me during the time we were roommates, and I think vice versa. We remained close over the years, and each time we would see each other, it always felt as if no time had passed since our last visit. He was one of the kindest and most creative people I have ever met, and I loved his unique style and fun little laugh. It breaks my heart that he left us so soon. I will always miss him and cherish the memories.

Penny, I am sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Funny, quirky, smart, loyal, and so incredibly talented - that's Steven.  He welcomed me to LA 14 years ago (we'd known each other for a number of years before that), shared his housecleaner with me (and several other friends in Venice), and launched this chapter of my life in SoCal.  I'm missing him, and sending my sympathies to his family, and his legion of friends.

We are thankful that we were privileged to watch Steven grow up and become the fine man that he was.  We have so many happy memories.  We are honored that he called us............

My deepest sympathy goes out to Steven's family and friends.  He was a man of immense talent coupled with a disarming charm.  He had a brilliant vision of how to live a gracious and comfortable life, not just through architecture, but through family, art, good food and wine, and the connections that reached out to a large group of wonderful, diverse and talented friends.  So many will mourn his passing, but will also be lifted up by the memory of his warm embrace of life and his appreciation of the beauty that he saw everywhere.  His passing far too soon is a loss for us all.

There were so many special times and special memories that we shared. One of my fondest memories is the trip we took to Chicago to tour the city. Even though I had been to the city many, many times before, you showed me a city from a viewpoint that I would have never ever seen without you. I learned so many things from you and you were such an important person in shaping mine and Tina's lives; life lessons that we have passed on to our children and in turn they pass on to others. I miss you and think of you every day; you will always be a part of me. Your time has passed far too quickly for all those who love you. All of my love to your family and many, many friends.

Ill never forget all the fun times we had many years ago as kids on our grandparents farm. I also will never forget the new year holiday that for many years our families spent together when we were younger.  We always had a crying time when it was time to leave. If we are very lucky, there will be people who enter our lives and change us for the better. Steven was one of those people. We met as nineteen-year-old college students searching for our creative voices in architecture. It was the beginning of a wonderful relationship that made me grow not only as an artist, but also as a person. It was such a joy to watch Steve's creative genius develop over the decades. He challenged me to look at the world with more than just my eyes. He created Beauty from solids and voids, texture and color, light and shadow, silence and sound, and balance and disorder. Like the wonderful spaces he created, he was a perplexing mixture of contradictions. He was the shy stylish cultured man in goofy tennis shoes with hair that always fell rakishly into his eyes. He never remembered my birthday until it had passed, but he always remembered that I love yellow roses and blue irises. He was the orange to my blue and we found our way to green and yellow together. That was his greatest gift to those of us who knew and loved him. He touched our lives and changed the way we saw the world. My dearest Steven, thank you for making this world a more beautiful place.

I treasured every moment of our time together in October with you.  Memories forever.  You are so precious.  Love, Auntie Babe
