Roy was born March 11, 1948 in Buckeye, Arizona to Carl Fred Alexander and Frances Josephine Barton Alexander. Roy was the third child of 2 sisters and 1 brother. He entered into the service of his country in 1968 and served 4 years as a target acquisition radar technician in the Vietnam Campaign. During that time he received the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters; the National Defense Service Medal; the Good Conduct Medal with Clasp, Bronze, 1 Loop; the Army Service Ribbon; the Overseas Service Ribbon; the Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars; the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm. Roy left the service in 1971 and reenlisted in 1977. He served in the Army an additional 4 years in active duty and 7 years in a reserve capacity. Roy was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and American Legion.
Roy meet Mary Ann Hedrick Killingsworth in the fall of 1976 and they married in April 1977. Though the Lord did not bless them with their own children here on earth, Roy had a compassionate heart to serve and to help mentor and guide the children in his family, his church family and his community. Roy had a passion for reading and learning. He with gifted with a highly technical mind and was an exceptional auto mechanic and an electronic wiz. Roy loved wood working and gardening. Roy’s greatest passion was his relationship with Christ. He dedicated himself to the in-depth study and knowledge of God’s Word. Roy served the Lord in his local church family at Friendship Baptist Church in Kilgore, Texas.
Roy was preceded in death by his grandparents, the Alexander’s and the Barton’s, by his aunt Myrtice Barton and his parents Carl and Frances Alexander. Roy is survived by his wife Mary Ann, his sister and husband Nancy and Bill Johnson, his brother and wife Allen and Rebecca Alexander, by his sister and husband Mysti and Gaylon Merritt, andby several nephews and nieces including Jonathan, Justin and Landon Merritt and Tamera Barber and David and Timothy Alexander. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at Lakeview Memorial Gardens, 5000 W Harrison Rd, Longview, TX 75604 at 2 pm. A viewing will be held that day at 1pm in the same location. In lieu of floral gifts, a donation can be made on his behalf to the Salvation Army.
