Carl Landrum, 69, fought a good fight, finished his course and kept the faith until the end. He died Thursday, May 15, following a bout with chemotherapy. Services to celebrate his life and honor his legacy will be held 10 a.m. Monday, at New Beginnings Baptist Church, 2137 George Richey Road, in Longview.
Carl was born Nov 19, 1945, in Wayne County, Miss., to E.C. and Estelle (Cooley) Landrum. He was sent home to die as a preemie, but defied all odds and lived a long, very blessed, life. He graduated from Clara High School in Clara, Miss. in 1966, and married his first true love, Mary Elizabeth Newell, in 1969. They had three daughters and were happily married for 42 years until her death in 2011. God blessed Carl with a second love and he married Barbara Feagan in January of this year.
Carl retired from Crown Cork and Seal in Longview in 1992 and became an expert horticulturist in landscaping. After his children graduated from White Oak High School, he relocated to East Mountain and purchased enough land to pursue his passion for horses. His personal favorites were Belle and Little Man, and his constant companion was Jake Landrum, a much-loved mutt.
Carl served the Lord joyfully as a member of New Beginnings Baptist Church and his hugs and encouragement will be greatly missed by the congregation. He was preceded to Heaven by his parents and wife, Elizabeth. Surviving him are wife, Barbara; daughters (and spouses): Cristy and David Baker, Bridgette and Johnny Martin, Amelia and Stan Browne, a step-son (and spouse) Adam Dowmont and Samantha Butler; one brother: Albert and Sara Landrum; brothers- and sisters-in-love: Thomas Newell, Danny and Kathy Newell, Sonny and Cynthia Freeman, and Ladora Long; grand-daughters (or Papa’s Polecats, as he called them): Katie Garrett, Beth Peterson, Amy Martin, Autumn Browne and Kyleigh Browne; and step-grandson: Cavan Dowmont. He is also survived by Irma Lee Doby, a special family friend; and many nieces, nephews and cousins, whom he loved. His infectious smile and servant’s heart also endeared him to a host of close friends.
Memorial contributions may be directed to New Beginnings Baptist Church.
