Shirley Ann Boyd Huston was born February 23, 1930, to Herbert and Rosa Boyd in Flat River, MO. Her family moved to Festus, MO when she was a year old. She graduated from Festus High School in 1948, where she played the French Horn. She also learned to play the piano and the first hymn she learned to play for her dad was “My Jesus, I Love Thee”. She continued to play the piano for most of her life. She went to be with her Lord on January 21, 2022, surrounded by her family.
When we think of Shirley three themes are present: Faith, Family and Friends. She attended Oklahoma Baptist University earning a secretarial certificate. While there she met her husband, Lester Huston through his sister, who was a friend of hers. Lester and Shirley were married October 31, 1952, in Festus, MO. They lived in many places while Lester went to school.
Shirley was very involved in church her entire life. She worked as a church secretary, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and was involved in missions. When Shirley was in her 80’s she drove older woman to church, most of whom were younger than her. She stopped driving others to church when she was 89.
She began working for Columbia Savings & Loan to put her four children through college. Her children’s education was very important to her. She also worked many holiday seasons at Leanin’ Tree. Shirley attended many sporting activities and music programs with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as family had a high priority in Shirley’s life. Lester and Shirley loved to travel and made many trips all over North America. They went to Arizona for 20 years as snowbirds, saying they were leaving their responsibilities behind and going with their friends. She had many lifelong friends, maintaining close relationships throughout her life. One of the most memorable trips was a trip to Germany where Lester served after WWII.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lester of 61 years, sister, Mary Kramme and a grandson in-law. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy and is survived by her children, Ron Huston (Cindy) of Lakewood, CO, Steve Huston (Jill) of Aurora, CO, Robert Huston (Susan) of Longmont, CO and Mary Struthers of Longmont, CO; 11 grandchildren and their spouses, 20 great-grandchildren (21 is on the way), and her brother, H. Don Boyd (Winnie) of Festus, MO.
A Memorial Service was held at Faithpoint Church in Longmont, CO on Friday, January 28, 2022. For those who were not able to attend, the service can be viewed at vimeo.com/669617499.
