Robert Devon Williams was born on August 28th, 1971, in Lebanon, Indiana to Richard Williams and Dreama Sue (Slagle) Williams. Robert spent his early years living in Indiana and Kansas before his family moved to Cheyenne Wells, Colorado, in 1981. While attending school, Robert participated in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He held the school record in both the 800 meter and the 1600 meter for several years. Robert graduated from Cheyenne Wells High School in May of 1990. He furthered his education at the Colorado School of Mines and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering in 1996. Upon graduation, he went to work for US West until March of 1997, when he was given the opportunity to go to work for Pioneer Communications in Ulysses, Kansas.
On March 28th, 1998, Robert married the love of his life, Heather Jackson, in Rolla, Kansas. To this union, Trevor Michael, Treyton Jacob, and Regan Delayne Williams were born. His mission in life quickly became taking care of his family and making sure they knew how much he loved them.
The family made their home in Ulysses until March of 2006, when they moved to Plainfield, Indiana, and Robert went to work for Endeavor Communications. And what a unit they became! The family that was close before the move became even closer. Robert always did his best for those under his care and tried hard to never miss a ball game, program, or any special event the kids were involved in.
In April of 2011, Robert moved to Broomfield, Colorado. The rest of the family followed in June and made their home in Erie, Colorado, when Robert accepted a job with Level 3 Communications. In June of 2013, Robert went to work for Zayo Group. Robert never asked anyone to do something that he wasn’t willing to do himself. If you did well, he was the first one to compliment you. If you didn’t do something correctly, he was willing to let you know what you had done wrong. His peers respected him as someone that could be depended upon and give his honest opinion.
Robert was always SO proud of his family and their accomplishments. Some of those proudest moments were watching his children graduate from Purdue University and Fort Hays State University (Trevor), University of Colorado (Treyton), and Monarch High School (Regan). He expected them to approach life with the same determination he had. “Always do your best. You are capable of doing anything you set your mind to.” Robert and Heather instilled in their children the belief that the only thing that limited their success was themselves. They made many sacrifices to make sure the kids had every opportunity to succeed.
Once you were in his circle, he would move Heaven and Earth to make sure you knew you were loved and that he would help you in any way that he could. He only knew how to do things one way (and that was his way). Robert believed that you worked hard and appreciated the rewards that came from having a good work ethic. One of those rewards he treasured most was spending time with his family on many family vacations to different places. Washington, D.C., New York City, Florida, California, Washington, and a cruise to the Eastern Caribbean were some of their favorite vacation spots.
On February 15th of 2021, Robert realized one of his own lifelong dreams when he became a private pilot. He spent many hours flying with family and friends. Every spare moment that he wasn’t working or spending time with his family was spent flying, or sharing his love of flying, with those around him. Second to his family, flying brought him the most joy.
On May 22nd, we lost him way too soon. He will be missed by many and will live on through the love and memories of his family and friends.
