Michael Patrick Herbert, born on June 11, 1953, in Detroit, Michigan, passed away on October 4, 2023 at Longs Peak Hospital in Longmont, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Mary Ellen (Neumann) Herbert and his parents, James and Kathleen (Westen) Herbert.
Mike is survived by his wife Alberta Marx, his daughter Kaitlyn Herbert Lamb (Kevin) and grandson Cameron Michael, step-daughter Angela Kalous (Tyler) and granddaughters Chandler and Kendall. He is also survived by his brothers, James, Timothy, and Robert Herbert and his sister Mary Kay (Herbert) Parker.
Having met in 1972, Mike married his first love, Mary Ellen Neumann, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan in 1975. Their shared love of adventure and the great outdoors led them to relocate to Colorado in 1977.
Soon after, Mike started his professional career as an automobile sales manager in Littleton, Colorado. In 1980, he moved to Longmont to help his father open a family-run automobile dealership, Herbert Motors. Starting as the General Manager, he was eventually elevated to President and majority owner in 1992. Wanting to strengthen his managerial acumen, Mike attended Regis University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1997. In 2003, Mike joined the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) as a Dealer Management Consultant where he enjoyed traveling the country advising dealerships on best practices for improving financial performance.
In 2012, Mike met and later married his second love, Alberta Marx. They shared a zest for life and living every day to its fullest. He was a beloved and long time member of Fox Hill Golf Club, where he enjoyed his weekly men’s group matches and competing in the annual Fox Hunt tournament. He was a talented musician and accomplished guitar player, regularly entertaining friends & family with the songs of Jimmy Buffett, Bob Dylan, and James Taylor.
Following his retirement in 2016, Mike split his time between Longmont and Maui, Hawaii. He spent much of his retired life basking in the sun with his feet in the sand. Mike relished the opportunity for others to experience the island he called home. His love of Hawaiian shirts was well known by all, as he lived by the credo “speak softly and wear a loud shirt.”
Mike was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who cherished the moments spent with his growing family. He will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor and quick wit. Mike had a profound love for gathering around the firepit, telling stories, singing songs, and offering heartfelt advice.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Howe Mortuary in Longmont, Colorado, on Saturday, October 21st at 1:00 pm, followed by a reception at The Fox Hill Golf Club at 2:30 pm. Please join us in remembering and celebrating Mike's life. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
To honor Mike’s spirit of aloha, the family invites guests to wear their finest Hawaiian attire. The service will be livestreamed virtually for those who cannot attend in person.
