Mary was born on February 9, 1927 in Longmont to Gerald Plumb and Odetta Axford Plumb. She was proud to be the third generation in Longmont and a member of Pioneer family Plumb moving to the Longmont area in the 1850’s.
Mary graduated from Longmont High School in 1945. She was a poet, author and bookworm. Named Class Poet of her class, she also was awarded the National Anthology for high school students her senior year. She kept very close to her surviving members of her graduating class and would be requested to draft a new poem every five years when they assembled.
Following high school Mary went to work for Evans Music. She married John L. Hafner on January 30, 1949 in Longmont. Following her marriage Mary focused on her family and children as a homemaker. She then worked in food service for the St. Vrain School District from 1968-1988, largely working at Longmont High School cafeteria. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Esther Circle. She was also a member of Eastern Star, Columbine Chapter, Longmont.
Mary was an accomplished piano player. She continued to have a passion for writing poems and tomes in general. Her crocheting kept her busy, as she made a personal afghan for each of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In later years she enjoyed travel, especially taking cruises with local groups and close friends. Her fondness for dancing found her out late trying to get one more dance in. On her 80th birthday she frightened her family and had the thrill of her life taking a balloon ride, smiling all the way.
Preceding her in death are her parents, her former husband and a grandchild John Paul Hafner.
Surviving are her daughter Cynthia (Sam) Clark of Hygiene; two sons Gary (JoAnn) Hafner and Mike (Jill) Hafner both of Longmont; five grandchildren; Cody (Heather) Hafner of Denver; Anne (Ryan McPherson) Clark of Boulder; Laura (John) Brennan of Longmont; and Sam and Tara Hafner of Longmont; great grandchildren Melody, Wyatt and Calum; a sister Patricia Ray of Denver, and a cousin Dottie McKean of Cedaredge.
