She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. "Jim" Phillips, her parents Deloss P. and Marguerite K. Shull, her brother, D. Carlton Shull, her sister, Sally E. Conner, and a granddaughter Emily K. Phillips.
Jody is survived by her three sons, James, Jr. "Jamie", (Cindy) of Spirit Lake, IA, Carey Michael (Sharon) of Boulder, CO, and Jeffery Carlton of Jefferson, SD; seven grandchildren, Shelly, Laurie, Joel, Jacob, and Alexander, Sirian, Christian, and two great grandsons, Jude and Kiran.
Jody was born and raised in Sioux City, IA. She graduated from Central High School and Mills College in Oakland, CA, where she met her future husband while he was a student at Stanford U. She taught school in San Mateo, CA while Jim was getting a degree at Princeton U. They married in 1951. After living in CA and Venezuela, they moved back to Sioux City, IA. In 1969 she helped her husband start a new business which was then called Phillips Kiln Service Co. After 19 years they retired to their summer home on Crandall's Beach in Spirit Lake, IA, and spent winters in Florida.
In 2013 they moved together to Boulder, CO where they lived with their son, Carey Michael and his wife Sharon for three years. After Jim's death, Jody moved to her own home in Boulder.
Jody was a member of Portfolio Book Study Club, a former member of Sioux City Junior League and the First Presbyterian Church of Spirit Lake. Her brother, father, uncle, and grandfather were at one time prominent Sioux City attorneys.
