Being born into a military family, James had the opportunity to spend over six years in Bavaria where he learned to ski at Berchtesgaden with his father’s 10th Special Forces Group. His childhood in Germany had a profound influence on him for the rest of his life.
He was a Navy veteran serving as a navigator on the Frances Scott Key Submarine. He also served in the Naval reserves. Upon leaving the Navy, Jim settled in the Yorktown, Virginia area where he was employed at Langley Air Force Base as a Graphic Artist for NASA for 26 years.
After retiring in 2019, James moved to Longmont, Colorado and was later joined by his son Will.
Natural artistic talent and college courses served him well throughout his life. James was an exceptionally talented fine artist who enjoyed wilderness hiking, furniture design, and creating incredible woodworking masterpieces. James is survived by his only son; William (Will) James Cato; his sister and lifelong friend, Jacquelyn (Jackie) Cato Bogardus, AKA Sissy; brother-in-law and best friend, Bill Bogardus; nephew, Derek (Natalie) and great nieces Avery and Emma. James is beloved by his numerous Aunts, Uncles, and cousins.
James was a true friend with a magnificent sense of humor. You knew you were part of the inner circle when he gave you a one-of-a-kind nickname that could not be used in mixed company!
