Elizabeth Schlagel passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Beatrice Hover Assisted Living surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 23, 1913 to Jacob and Christine Haas in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on board the ship, Lloyd Dampfers Breslau. Her parents were German immigrants from Pabotchnaya, Russia. Her parents came to Berthoud, Colorado to farm and raise their family. She attended Mead and Nelson school. She was the oldest of 12 children and the last remaining member of her immediate family. Elizabeth married Jacob P Schlagel on April 11, 1934. They enjoyed sixty-two years of marriage living in the Longmont area, building a successful farm and dairy operation, while raising their family. She was a successful homemaker and enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening, raising the world's best raspberries, and most of all spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her faith was of the utmost importance and she was an active member of Christ Congregational Church where she was a member for more than ninety years, where she taught Sunday School. She also valued time with friends and looked forward to attending Women's Fellowship, where she held numerous offices. Elizabeth enjoyed the Jolly Dozen Club and Country Club, of which she was the oldest living member. She was known for her dedication to the community, donating her time, along with her famous angel food cakes and homemade noodles. The Boulder County Fair was one of the highlights of her year as she enjoyed watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate and exhibit in numerous activities. She proudly served on the Nelson School Board for eight years. She was a meticulous bookkeeper and served as the Treasurer of the Peck Ditch Company for more than twenty-seven years. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jake Schlagel in 1997, oldest son Robert Schlagel, son-in-law Kent Anderson, granddaughter Vickie Anderson Gebauer and grandson-in-law Leroy Zimbelman. She also was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Christine (Rudy) Haas, and by her siblings including: Christine, John, Katy, Justine, Mary, Henry, Jake, Walter, Frieda, Fredrich and Helen. She is survived by a large and loving family including her daughter Ruth Anderson of Roggen, Colorado, son Ronald Schlagel and friend Cindy Baumgartner of Keenesburg, Colorado, daughter-in-law Phyllis Schlagel of Johnstown, daughter-in-law Cathy Schlagel of Keenesburg, Colorado, as well as ten grandchildren including Dana (Dave) Bachman, Tom (JilAnn) Schlagel, Charlie (Veronica) Schlagel, Cherie (Randy) Oatman, Doug Anderson, Amy (Jeff) Cooksey, Christie Rupple, Jill Zimbelman, Jennifer (Keith) Long, Brenda (Jack) Maughan. She also is survived by her twenty-three great-grandchildren Jake (Amy) Bachman, Jaime Bachman, Cody, Bobby, Jacob, Nyah and Colten Schlagel and Joshua Oatman, Christie (Mark) Denniston, Jennie Gebauer, Sarah and Molly Cooksey and Paul (Amber) Rupple, Ryan (Brittney) Rupple, Chad (Krystin) Rupple, Caitie and Erin Zimbelman, Kyle, Nick and Mark Long, Henry, Augustus and Samuel Maughan and five great-great-grandchildren including Mikayla, Leah and Ethan, Tayven and Dawson Rupple and Cooper Zimbelman and numerous nieces and nephews. She also is survived by two very loving and devoted friends Bobbie Meglemre and Jane Krueger. Visitation will be on Monday, May 7 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel with family present. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 8 at Christ Congregational Church. Internment at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Cystic Fibrosis in care of Children's Hospital in Denver, Colorado.
