Alex Joseph Ewing, born May 6, 1988, past away peacefully on December 8th at far too young of an age. He as only 34. His death was accidental. Alex suffered from deep depression combined with addiction. Like he had done many times before, he attempted to soften his suffering by drinking. Only this time he did it outside in cold weather. Alex blacked out, went to sleep and died from exposure. He did not suffer.
Alex is survived by his mother and father Jeff and Kathy Ewing of Erie, Colorado, a sister Kristen Bergeron and her husband Allen who live in Ogden, Utah, a brother Adam and his wife Linda who live in Stockholm, Sweden, and a sister Katie and her husband Kyle who live in Johnstown, Colorado. Alex is also survived by seven nieces and nephews.
My wife Kathy and I are profoundly sad to have lost our son, but we know that he is in a better place. Alex was a delight when he was happier. I enjoyed our long talks about books and nature, and even politics. We met for breakfast every week. But, despite all of the programs, doctors, meds, and therapists, Alex was not improving. Just the opposite. His death was accidental and merciful. It was his time and his pain is over.
It will take time for my wife and me. Helping Alex and worrying about him was constant and draining. His death was going from 100 mph for nearly 20 years and coming to an abrupt and unexpected stop. We are still suffering from emotional whiplash, but we will soon smile thinking of dear Alex. He was a sweet young man with a tortured soul.
I thank God that we invited Alex to spend the winter with us. He was not homeless. He had a warm bed, good food and was blanketed with love. He was able to spend time with his nieces and nephews.
I remember Alex's grandfather, my dad, counseling me to live my life so that I had no regrets when it came to loved ones and friends, to be kind. Kathy and I have no regrets when it comes to Alex. We devoted our hearts, and energy to helping him.
We love you Alex and hope to see you again one day.
Love Mom and Dad and your loving family.
