LeRoy was born in Swickley, PA to Albert and Frances Johnson. He grew up in the Chicago area with his three brothers, Buster, Elmer and Bill. He worked at his dad's hardware store where he began to learn different trades. On December 11, 1942 he enlisted in the Navy and served his country until September 15, 1984 when he was honorable discharged and retired from the US Navy and Seabees. During this period, LeRoy served in WWII, the Korean War and Seabee construction in Guam. He joined Painters Union Local 949 in San Pedro in 1949. He obtained a civil service job at Fort MacArthur on February 23, 1955 working in the engineering division. He retired as chief of buildings and grounds from his civil service job in January of 1984. LeRoy was actively involved with the community and his church. He was an avid motorcyclist, truly loved golf, was an artistic poet and photographer, a great comedian, certified locksmith and a professional junk collector. He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Gary who passed away in 2001 at age 51. He is survived by his children, Craig, Leonard, Sally, Mark and John; 17 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Visitation will be on Thursday, August 11, 2011 from 4- 7 pm at the mortuary chapel.
