After a long rich life that touched many people, Mary Newman, passed away peacefully at Victoria Hospital on April 09, 2018. Mary was in her 100th year. Loving mother of Gloria (Bill) Longshaw and Marilyn (Bud) Willis. Precious grandmother to three grandsons: Torin and Tyler Longshaw and Barret Willis. Dear great grandmother to Spencer and Reilly Longshaw and Tyce and Ashlyn Willis. Predeceased by her husband Everett, son Johnny, mother Barbara Baer, sisters Theresa (Joe) Habermiller and Cecilia (Louis) Janis and niece Marion (Don) Schroeder. Survived by her nieces Heather and Daphne Janis.
Growing up on a large independent farm in Saskatchewan she married a hired hand who joined the Air Force. They travelled across the country finally settling down in London, Ontario. Mary went back to school with only a grade 8 education to become a Registered Nurses Assistant and worked for many years at the old Victoria Hospital and then the newly built University Hospital. She was a natural nurse who knew just what to do to bring comfort and relief to her patients.
Mary loved life and was a talented craft person. She created beautiful works of knitting, quilting, crocheting, baking, sewing, ceramic dolls, needlework and gardening. She loved animals and had three cherished dogs over the years.
She will be missed for her determined and independent spirit. May she rest in peace…
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation for Mary at Needham Funeral Service (520 Dundas Street, London) on April 12, 2018 from 2pm to 3pm. Followed by a celebration of her life at 3pm. Mary’s family requests that you consider the London Health Sciences or a charity of your choice for memorial donations.
